XL Adventure Motorcycle Rider
United States
Приєднався 14 кві 2015
While "adventure" is defined by the rider, in some on-line communities there can be a lot of "noise" about what is or isn't a "real" adventure bike. Often times, big adventure riders are bashed as riding machines that are slow, heavy, overpriced, and not capable of much beyond being ridden to the local Starbucks for a latte.
Not that these opinions really matter all that much, but the bashing & noise can get pretty old. So, we decided to create an on-line community specifically where big adventure bike riders can get together to share their passion, knowledge, and experiences.
XLADV.com is based upon a discussion forum, but we also launched with interesting, valuable features that include a Garage system where you can showcase your bikes and their mods and a Rider Reviews system where you can read and submit reviews of the bikes and products that you have experience with.

Trailmax Raid Tires from Dunlop Tested on White Mountain

More at the forum but wanted to get this video up on testing of the new Trailmax Raid tires from Dunlop. I’d done deep sand the day before with no issues and this video is like 2,000m in 6 minutes going up Silver Canyon road near Bishop, CA up to the White Mountain. Terrain is very steep loose rock with tight switchbacks. Road was in good condition vs previous trips up it. Tires did very well o...
UABRLA Compressor Review

Been seeing a lot of these lithium ion battery powered compressors out there and gave this one a shot. $75 on Amazon. Great pump but ill-suited for use on the road due mostly to the fact lithium batteries swell and fail over 45c/113F. Sand/dust and moisture will caus this one to fail as well. As with GPS units vs your phone, you’re better off with a moto specific pump such as from MotoPumps. Mo...

7 Month Review of the Carlsbad Suit from Klim

This is an update after seven months of use on the road now in Costa Rica of my Klim Carlsbad suit. Super happy with it and blown away at how this suit stands out from all others. For one, I’m already wearing my rain suit and don’t have to stop to put on rain gear like others. Neither do I have to stop to open or close vents as I can do all 11 with one hand or the other safely while riding. Hug...

I wish the speed rating was higher on these tires
Thanks!
How do these do on pavement in the rain? I ride a Super Tenere cross-country and do light BDR-style riding, mostly in Utah. But I have to get there first and that means long days on the interstate through whatever weather there happens to be. A long-wearing tire with moderate off-road chops like this sounds perfect, but not if I'm risking an incident in rain (I always hit rain, never fails).
They’re great in rain but I’d go with the Raid for a BDR
Best tyres for allround, I can agree, 3rd set, but once it is raining, you have to stop the 1200gs on the tarmac. It is scary slippery! Traction control kiks in in 4th, rain mode locks rear in corners, so you have to release the break. 100miles.tarmac rain, and I run off 2 times.
the install guide recommends not blocking the fan
60/40 mostly
Thank you so much for taking the time 🙏🏼. I'm currently shopping for tires for my '11 vstrom 650. I've noticed another reviewer or two mention how these tires might be on the heavy side for 650 bikes, possibly robbing power: if I may ask, what is your take on that? I mostly ride out of town 2-lane asphalt highways, with a little expressway to get to them . Once I'm out there, occasional exploring on gravel and sand. (South Texas/Mexico border). I'd like to be prepared, and from your explanation, these sound right for me. (Currently running Anakee III). Thanks again, and safe travels! 🙏🏼
They are built for adventure so I see weight as a feature not a bug. I’d hike the Grand Canyon in hiking boots and not flip flops. They’re decent in easy sand/gracel but I’d go with the Raid for something like Baja.
@@XLAdvRider thanks again!
Review update: the gauge on both mine and a buddy’s quickly failed. Mine said 30 psi but it was 52! My buddy’s runs low (36 psi is really about 33 psi)
They wear like IRON. If not doing super deep sand or nasty mud, they are a great tire.
how about on hwy?I have a pan and want to ride to my dirt roads etc?
@@greenrush4313 they work well on the highway. A little wiggly on rain grooves, but overall they are decent.
@@greenrush4313first time I’ve scraped pegs on this bike so I’d say very well
Florida to Oregon coast, up to Bella Coola BC … Idaho BDR, Wyoming BDR, across to Maine, NE BDR, MA BDR, back to Florida … 5 months of banging about (living off the bike, camping the whole time) … 21,400 miles(with tread to spare) … R1200GS … no flats to problems… love these tires …
@@timlubbers2884 fantastic feedback. Sounds like an AMAZING trip!!!
Anyone knnowsz what tank caps they use.. I mean entire thing cap + bottom part..
Givi 2.5L Fuel cell $19 = Priceless 😂😂
No one tests tires in the East. I need to see rocks, mud, leaves, ruts, roots, downed trees, etc.
Dude! That trail is so smoother than it used to be! And I know those switchbacks are so much steeper than they look here. Well done 👏🏼
Yeah it was in the best shape I’ve ever seen it but regret not riding with you guys that day
still one of my favorite videos of all time!
Love it! Put 350 hard miles on them on Monday…. And have just over 1k on them to date. Fantastic tires! Thanks Dunlop

How is their road performance? I'm thinking about putting them on my KTM 1290 SAR but I do a lot of road as well.
@@TomasLonGothey did great on the road. Nice crown and softer sidewalls for the curves
Need videos on how to make tracks
I carry this in a hardshell case on my electric scooter so unless you have a Walmart motorcycle that doesn't have a storage compartment, then I don't see why you couldn't take it everywhere.
Well adventure riders usually ride in more extreme conditions like heat, rain, dirt roads, bumpy roads, etc…. I’ve had a few other compressors fail.
should just mount your gopro on your helmet and ride those tidbits were no fun at all
Was using a Sena Prism Tube camera. I forgot to charge it one night and missed the best of the tall dunes 😢
Those are my boots! Sturdy, comfortable, and yet so much protection besides the soft layer at the talon area. Other than this, think it is the boot to go when traveling far away places and even doing local rides across hometown.
Do you mean talus area? And without that soft area you wouldn't have any articulation.
Does the stay touch the exhaust? Or how much is the gap there?
No issues
Thank you!
Love the fact you can reach the rear vents while riding! Need a waist adjustment strap since it’s a baggy fit.
Pants have a Velcro adjuster and jacket has a gather on either side to keep it snug
I've crossed the world on my BMW GS Adventure bikes. I've probably been super lucky and have had 1 or 2 drops where my book sort of saved me... But I wear Daytona boots like most European riders -- I'm American. They suck at protection but are like wearing Nike for walking... How comfortable are those for your South American trip for walking after you get off the bike for the few hours of touring towns, etc -- which I've done twice...?
I can walk comfortably but not too far. Enduro boots no way.
Can you ride in the jacket comfortable, when it is over 25-30 degrees Celsius?
Show the dang bags more!
Very cool.
I'm an Australian postie who has only ever worn basic leather road boots before, and they offered no protection from cold, wet, or impact. I bought a pair of Adventure 2 boots yesterday. They are not cheap boots, but are widely considered to be the best heavy-duty touring boots available. The lack of a zipper makes them easier by far to pull on and the adjustable buckles are part of the boot's rigid protection system. These boots will keep my feet and lower leg comfortable and very well protected, without reducing my ability to walk when dismounted. I doubt that I'll ever twist my ankle on uneven surfaces wearing these beauties.
Wished the camera was set back to actually see the entire kit! Thanks for the info.
Have a more recent review video. Check it out
@@XLAdvRider Thank you!
To the OP, Thanks for posting this video. I’ve heard good things about this Carlsbad jacket & pants from an adventure rider riding in Australian conditions. Those zippable sleeve cuffs look the business for ventilation. Are you sure you are supposed to spray a water-proofing agent on the Goretex? I thought it was just about washing the garment from time to time, to keep allowing the Goretex to do it’s job (don’t let water in, let sweat evaporate out).
super frigging annoying video, point the dam camera at your gear, your face does not get any prettier as the video streams on omg
Background noise much…?
Nit pick much?
It’s a real in field review
Man what do u expect. These reviews are the best. This dude wears this thing and is a real person. When revzilla reviews something they have 5000 jackets they have tried and have worn them for 5 minutes.
Sorry for the noise. I was at Elephant Moto tours in San Jose, Costa Rica and Juanca was power washing motos 😂
Shield not staying up is a well known issue. Klim will not help.
A few 5 horses???? what is that?
Pannier racks are symmetric or the exhaust rack is longer? Thanks
Just came back from San Felipe from LA..... didn't get to do the Compadre trail.... next time I must hit that trail vs hwy 5. Whoops are no joke, I had to take a break between one of the whoops.
I have both the jacket and the pants. Jacket is awesome. Pants not so much. They have, good ventilation, solid waterproofing. Top of the line knee armor pocket is sewn in wrong; as a result the armor protects the inside of your knee. When you look at the construction of the garment it’s pretty obvious that the placement is an error. Klim support basically told me that they did this intentionally so they would not correct the issue. If you intend to use separate knee armor these pants will be fine but if you want to use the D30 that comes with the pants you should look somewhere else. The armor placement makes it useless. For a company with a reputation as good as klim's the customer service is horrible.
If I had to guess about their thinking on the knee placement, maybe it's because the bike may fall on someone and usually falls on the knee there? It does seem odd there is no protection in the front though.

Is the rally designed for smaller bikes? Deep sand is not big bike friendly, like you needed me to comment to that.
Smaller is definitely easier. The bigger motos require more skill, experience and energy 😂
Sand can go F itself. It’s miserable.
I see an amount of piling and velcro wear for only 7 months wear. Other than the reflective sticker and zipper tether, are you really happy with how it is performing in the context of 'wear and tear'?
I actually am not noticing any pilling of my velcro but I am familiar with that issue in other applications. My friend told me his BMW cuffs almost immediately started pilling and becoming less "sticky" to the point they don't stay closed anymore. He also reported that in the waist straps. Not an issue at all for me. Actually i often will have the velcro from my right cuff stick to my left pocket when I open it lol. I also clean my suit regularly which they recommend. Dirt can really degrade many functions.
What is the Carlsbad like for sizing? What size in inches would the XL be?
I'd recommend you see their size chart at their website. To me they seem to run a bit bigger than you'd expect compared to the European brands like RevIt, Rukka, etc... I will often wear t-shirts in XXL (mostly for length) but the XL for Carlsbad fits me fine. I even tried on one of their windbreakers in L and it fit me but was a bit tight. Not sure my chest size recently but I'm fairly sure it's 46". Better yet, find a Klim retailer near you and just try them on. Many regional rallies will also have a Klim retailer there such at Overland Expo, IMS, etc... They have a good return policy too. I bought my first Klim gear like 10 years ago and they've only gotten better.
I have the same set even the color, I love it. I'm a Klim believer
Yeah I've purchased their stuff for about 10 years and love it. They've gotten better at it each iteration too.
Thank you for the review. Going to order this set. Cheers

Great review....just ordered. Thanks for the video. Pushed me over from sitting on the fence. 😎
I’ve heard some complaints that the sleeve cuff zippers start to ride up after a little while. Have you experienced this?
I have not but have been riding with them open about 98% of the time
Deepending on how proper they are closed, they can move (ride up) approximately 1-2 cm. Therefore yes what you have heard I can confirm after using Carlsbad Jacket myself for about 1,5 years / 18.000 km. Nevertheless it is something which will not hinder me to purchase this product again. I recommend this Jacket strongly in respect of its functions and quality as well behaviour.
I’m not completely convinced the additional venting is worth dumping my original Krios
You may be right there. I'd heard it was a complaint but my last Krios never bothered me that way
Wrong title? Ive recently gone back to a full mx boot instead of the adventure type. The Sidis look nice. Good to hear the review.
Yep. Doh! All fixed now ;)
Do the pants have armor?
yes, in the knees and hips. D30
